Questions of spiritual possession

What the tradition says, and why medical follow-up remains essential.

Possession (al-mass) is part of the beliefs of many Muslims. Abdelaziz encounters it regularly and speaks about it with caution.

From his experience, he distinguishes several situations: a presence said to be constant, another that would only show itself at times, and yet another that would appear and then disappear. In his view, the latter are the hardest to recognise and to support.

An absolute principle: no violence

Abdelaziz is categorical: a raqi must never strike anyone or use physical force of any kind. It is the person who suffers, and it can seriously harm them. Roqya is based on recitation and invocation.

Emergency: health comes first. Hallucinations, agitation, seizures, incoherent speech or dark thoughts require prompt medical care (15 or 112). Spiritual support can come in addition, never as a replacement.

No need to be afraid

These subjects are impressive. Yet the tradition invites serenity: the believer is protected by prayer, recitation and trust in Allah.
