The evil eye
What the tradition says about it, and how to protect yourself calmly.
In the Islamic tradition, the evil eye (al-ʿayn) refers to the harm that can result from a gaze charged with envy or excessive admiration.
The Prophet ﷺ affirmed its reality in a hadith reported by al-Bukhârî and Muslim. According to Abdelaziz, the evil eye is often unintentional: a person can carry it without knowing, and it can even affect those closest to them.
Protecting yourself without worrying
- When admiring something, ask for blessing: “mâ shâ' Allâh”, “bâraka Allâhu fîk”.
- Regularly recite the morning and evening invocations, Âyat al-Kursî and the last two surahs of the Quran.
- Stay somewhat discreet about your blessings and joys, without falling into suspicion.
Not everything is the evil eye
Tiredness, failure or illness most often have ordinary causes. Abdelaziz listens to you, but he also encourages you to see a doctor about any physical or psychological symptom.
