The prophetic tradition reports that the black seed (al-habba as-sawdâ') contains a cure for every disease except death. Hadith reported by al-Bukhârî and Muslim.
Reference to be validatedNigella, or black cumin (Nigella sativa), is a plant of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). Its seeds and the oil extracted from them are among the products most used in roqya and prophetic medicine.
In the tradition
- Black seed oil used as a medium for recitation in roqya.
- Ground seeds used to spice and flavour dishes, especially in North Africa.
- Traditional cosmetic use: care of the scalp and hair, especially in the Middle East.
What research says
- The seed contains thymoquinone, a molecule studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
- A few small clinical trials suggest modest effects on blood sugar or blood pressure. The data are still insufficient to make it a treatment.
- It does not replace any treatment for diabetes, epilepsy or high blood pressure.
Precautions
- Not recommended in concentrated form (oil, extracts) during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Possible interactions with anticoagulants and diabetes medication: talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
- The oil can irritate the skin: test it on a small area first.
